This clip of a session about “Working Families Summit” that was held in June 2014 is very interesting; got my curiosity and interestingly I learned many things that Mrs. Obama have shared from her experiences in both the corporate life and the importance of family balance.  Everyone,  young couple or parents must view or listen to their conversations regarding family.

One experience she shared that caught my attention has validated the negotiating skills that I normally discuss and coach clients for employment interviewing;  her realistic presentation of herself relating to her current situation when she went to an interview with the University of Chicago Hospital was a demonstration of competency that employer cannot ignore; she got the job!

I have been advocating this approach to clients in the last 20 years and many were successful in getting their value met at the table. Interviewing is an activity of negotiation; not presenting and listening followed by shake hands and then will hear from either party later. If one likes to get ahead in the 21st Century, do like what Mrs. Obama have done. This is an ROI-driven strategy and technique that will balance your competency and commensurate compensation.

Few people take advantage of the people they work with for short term gains for self-serving entitlement.

Many of the so called leaders of today are afraid to get out from their cocoons. They wanted people who work with them to adapt into their personal work styles and practices instead of fostering collaboration, welcoming other concepts, ideas and styles that they were not familiar.

Oftentimes, you see a lot of them portraying ‘lip servicing’; many are short of displaying what they said as who they were; because their insecurities blanketed them; they are living in their own comfort zone with ‘antiquing style’ of leadership.

    1. listen actively: watch of signals, actions, phrases used, and articulation – you can determine so and so whether it is worth investing additional time or not
    2. rise above those who will try to impose their personal views, these are not the right connections to be with
  3. Create an influencing opportunity; be ready to discuss objectively about your goals in attending the event;

    1. do not give a sales pitch, however share why you are attending with reasons that are in line with the host’s objectives
    2. practice active listening (see item 2.1 above)
  4. Share only with particular individuals the things that are informative yet essential that will influence that person to ask more questions about you and your business;

    1. highlight your competency that are easily understood by the person you are speaking with
    2. use words that are action and concrete oriented
    3. avoid using technical term that will make your listener turn off his/her listening interest
  5. Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism; it will get the same respect and integrity;

    1. share only your business card to someone with equal interest
    2. do not tell someone you call him/her when you think there are no points of interest between your intent and theirs
    3. many smart individuals can decipher behaviors that are respectable and untrustworthy

On Gardening: How restoring your soil can help fight climate change by Tom Karwin

The threat of climate change has become a concern among scientists, environmentalists and gardeners (who might wear all three of these hats, of course). In the search for a solution to this problem, these three interested parties have common ground.

Our climate is changing as a result of a disruption of the carbon cycle. On Earth, a fixed amount of carbon moves through different forms: liquid, solid or gas.

Carbon enters the atmosphere from several sources, including respiration and decay of animals and plants, eruptions of volcanoes and releases of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) from the oceans.

Plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and use photosynthesis to release oxygen back into the atmosphere and convert carbon into sugars that support the plant’s above-ground growth. At the same time, up to 40 percent of the CO2 goes to the plant’s roots, to feed soil microbes. The microbes help the plant acquire nutrients through its roots, and lock (“sequester”) carbon into the soil for very long periods.

The carbon cycle supports Earth’s climate and enables the growth of plants and all other living things.

This complex natural process balances the amount of carbon in liquid, solid and gas forms. Vast amounts of carbon are stored in the soil and fossil fuels, and much smaller amounts are stored in the atmosphere, the oceans and plants.

During the Industrial Revolution (about 1760 to 1830), humans began burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, draining wetlands, converting grasslands to large-scale crops, paving paradise and applying synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These activities have been disrupting the carbon cycle and altering this important balance.

The consequences include degraded soil with reduced ability to capture carbon, an excess of carbon in the atmosphere and the acidification of the oceans, none of which is beneficial to living things (including us).

The broad term, climate change, encompasses all of these negative effects.

Restoring the natural carbon cycle could reverse climate change.

Restoration requires feeding the soil with organic matter and planting cover crops to protect the soil from temperature extremes and erosion. In short, the solution is based upon regenerative, organic agriculture.

This strategy must be employed on a global scale, but we all should understand the carbon cycle and support this process of soil restoration in our own gardens and in our individual contributions to relevant public policy. Substantial private interests are invested in fossil fuels, “conventional” monoculture agriculture that depends upon synthetic chemicals, and other industrial methods that are changing our climate. They can be expected to resist this strategy of working with nature, so eventual success requires our vision and long-term commitment.

Each gardener could participate first in his or her own garden. That would be a fine way to celebrate our independence from, in this context, commercial interests.
