Germany On a Path to Marriage Equality #SameSexMarriage

By: Jalenn Turre, Marketing, Business & Social Media Strategist

In a recent development, Germany is on its path for Marriage Equality.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel encouraged the Bundestag Members to weigh-in on “question for conscience”.  Her Parliamentary Leader Volker Kauder asked CDU’s members of the Bundestag to show for the vote. CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) is Angela Merkel’s political party. The Social Democrats, Merkel’s  grand coalition partner are expected to table the voting sooner than September 24, 2017. (credit source: dw.com)

Speculations indicate that the vote may pass as majority of the Germans do not opposed to SameSex Marriage according to a study that was released  early this year by Germany’s Anti-discrimination Agency. Perhaps in the coming days or weeks Germany’s Marriage Equality will become a reality.

Employers Found College Grads with Inadequate Cultural Competency

By: Juntee Terrenal, GMS, Strategic International Business Leader, Adviser & Coach

Recently, the American Association of Colleges and Universities published one of their findings about college graduates. It is interesting to note that with this era of globalization, colleges and universities have not step up in increasing competitive advantage of their products, the college graduates.

collegegrads inadequate culture competency

In the graph that was released, it illustrated that the international skills and knowledge at the bottom of the chart. Below 25 percent of surveyed employers said that college graduates that they hired were below par in meeting their business expectations.

“When it comes to the types of skills and knowledge that employers feel are most important to workplace success, large majorities of employers do NOT feel that recent college graduates are well prepared. This is particularly the case for applying knowledge and skills in real-world settings, critical thinking skills, and written and oral communication skills — areas in which fewer than three in 10 employers think that recent college graduates are well prepared. Yet even in the areas of ethical decision-making and working with others in teams, many employers do not give graduates high marks,” the AACU report says.

Indeed, a fascinating illustrations of how commercialized our educational systems and not meeting the expectations of industries that employ their graduates. In the last ten years, my team in ReloNavigator has been extensively involved in the development of global competency among leaders of internationally operating organizations.  We have defined then the needed competency of professionals who will be working in a global landscape.  We also published numerous articles in the same perspectives to share our focus for the development of people as they are the brand that will demonstrate the High Performance Organization.

Below is the illustration of “Global Competency” that will make one become successful internationally, regardless of his or her functional responsibilities.

Martin Luther King Jr Day – USA Holiday

By: Jalenn Turre, Marketing, Business & Social Media Strategist

January 19, 2015 is a US Federal Holiday. It is the day to remember the legacy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has fought for us, being an American. He was born on January 15, 1928 and was assassinated in April 4th 1968. He stood for justice and equality as a civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King Jr

“I am in Birmingham because injustice is here,’’ he wrote in the letter, dated April 16, 1963. “… We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God given rights. The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jetlike speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse and buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter.’’ – said Martin Luther King III, noted of his father’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.

He therefore called it ‘tuka’ which is ‘peacock’ in Tamil, and Indian language.

The Native American name for turkey is ‘firkee’; some say this is how turkeys got their name. Simple facts, however, sometimes produce the best answers-when a turkey is scared, it makes a “turk, turk, turk” noise.

10 Turkey Facts You May Not Know

  1. At one time, the turkey and the bald eagle were each considered as the national symbol of America. Benjamin Franklin was one of those who argues passionately on behalf of the turkey. Franklin felt the turkey, although “vain and silly”, was a better choice than the bald eagle, whom he felt was “a coward”
  2. American per capital consumption of turkeys has soared from 8.3 pounds in 1975 to 18.5 pounds in 1997 and has remained stable at about 16 pounds since 2011.
  3. Turkeys are fed a diet of mainly corn and soybean meal along with a supplement of vitamins and minerals. They grow to full maturity in about 4 to 5 months, depending on the desired market weight.

Canadian Story To Be Shared Internationally

This story appeared and published by Vancouver Sun, dated November 12, 2014.

Thank you Vancouver Sun for sharing and it is a story to be told internationally.  Mr. Richard Brunt, thank you for sharing us your realistic view and observations.

“The reaction is right off the Richter scale,” Brunt said Tuesday. “People are phoning and emailing me. I had no idea it would even get published. I had to shut down my Twitter account.”

“When you are done with Obama, can you send him our way?”

Canadian Story - Obama VancouverSun

Brunt said he was inspired to write the letter because of an article in the Detroit paper. “I was a little bit upset with the U.S. midterm elections and I was surfing the Net … and something in the Detroit Free Press caught my eye and annoyed me and so I just replied.”

Indeed, only the few handful will read and understand Mr. Brunt’s message. However, in American way what’s the next politics in play!

Let’s Celebrate the 2014 Festival of Lights, “Happy Diwali / Deepavali to All Our Friends”

By: Jalenn Turre, Marketing, Business & Social Media Strategist

Happy Diwali 2014

Diwali is an important festival of the year and is celebrated among families of Hindus by performing traditional activities together in their homes. In India, the official holiday is called Deepavali.

Diwali is on the 15th day of the month Kartika (October/November) in the Hindu calendar. The 5 day festival begins on the 13th day in the dark half of Ashwin and ends on the 2nd day in the bright half of Kartika. As the calculation is primarily based on the moon, the day of Diwali Festival varies in the Gregorian Calendar between the 17th October and 15th November every year. (source: deepavali.net)

Diwali, also known as Festival of Lights is celebrated around the world which began during the mid of this week (October 23, 2014). CNN described as the famous display of spectacular light decorations during the five-day event. (source: CNN.com)

Culture Note Regarding Diwali:

Traditionally, they believe that the Hindu goddess of good luck visits their homes that are brightly lit. Many homes are lighted with various shapes, forms and colors during this festival of lights.

In today’s international Diwali celebrations, it is focus on family and friends; the time to reflect about the past and looking forward to what the future brings; with the international challenges many aspires that people around the world live together in harmony; that the truth overcomes false pretenses and light overshadows the darkness.

Millennials Can Be Successful or Fail Abroad

By: Juntee Terrenal, GMS, Strategic International Business Leader, Adviser & Coach

Internationally, the impact of financial crises during the past years have challenged all generations in regards to opportunities that sustain stability, growth and advancement. The Millennials are the most challenged group, because they were just beginning after college life. Notwithstanding of the ‘boomers’ that are experiencing over 50 employment crises.  What is the promise of the future for the Millennials? With the current economic challenges of today, there is no strong evidence of sustainable tomorrow. With that said, there is a millennial behavior that stands out – it is Optimism about the future.

Millenials Opps

A recent study by Boston Consulting regarding global talents; it deciphered international opportunities for Millennials based on their manifested interests.  The illustrations provided demonstrate the evidence that today’s globalized world, people are working abroad and many signified interests in working abroad, including identified countries where people would like to go and work. Please note however, that the data was derived from sample size of 203,756 from various countries listed below.

As seen in the Illustration below, the participants in this study indicated the countries that attracts them. The United States of America tops, United Kingdom as number two choice; as the destination of adventurous youngsters from various countries. This study sustains the 2014 facts gathered within the International Workforce Mobility  industry, that United States (7%) and United Kingdom (6%) respectively host the most expats on current international assignments.

The study identified that 42 percent of  all respondents like to move and work in USA; they are coming from “many impoverished nations including Nigeria, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Honduras.”(source: bcgperspectives.com)

Quite interesting to see below, that there is 59 percent of young Americans (whose age range 21-30) are more than willing to go abroad.  The study showed that Americans find greater interests in non-traditional career abroad like temporary non-profit work. Participants indicated that they can’t get their careers start within the US due to the impact of the recession.

Indeed, the globalization of workforce is progressively trending and advancing. Look at the global average of 63.8 percent. In every column of the illustration below, it shows the countries that generate the level of interest of working abroad.

What This Means Internationally?

The economic constraints triggered greater interests of younger generation to explore opportunities for career and better adventure abroad. Career opportunities at home are not challenging and not engaging outside the traditional business practices. Millennials are bound for greater challenges across borders and continents.

The globalization of workforce is in the upward swing:

Many industries must be ready in acquiring the talents of the Millennials. Organization’s management teams must gear up in advancing the competency in leading, managing and interacting with the Millennials. This group of generation do not curb into the mold of traditional business practices. The big question; is your organization ready in hiring the Millennials today and in the near future?

Leadership Global Competency that demonstrate successful work relationship with the Millennials:

global competency

Int'l HCM

In countries and organizations, where there are shortage of competent professionals in managing multi-culture workforce; the upswing of Millennials from across the globe will create greater challenges in the management of people.

Based on this study, the United States attracts most of the Millennials. An appropriate question that should be asked from executives, group managers, team leaders, is about the readiness of their organization in responding to the Millennials’ availability, aptitude and personal competence?

In the contrary, a recent article that I wrote indicated the evidence of inadequate strategic competency of Human Resources professionals. These were the main concerns of over thousand global executives that were surveyed. Please click on the link “Strategic & High Performing Organization for the 21st Century”.

Many managers and human resources professionals do not demonstrate cross-culture competency. Employing  multicultural workforce require strategic competency in supporting them cross-culturally and effectively. Notwithstanding, that these workers from other countries will demonstrate high proficiency, energy, think critically and they are a different generation, called Millennials.

Majority of their views, lifestyles and philosophies in life are not relevant to highly organized and structured organization. Their style of working do not conform to traditional ways and business practices.  Their interpersonal approaches in regards to business relationships within work environments as well as outside work premises are different.

Behaviors and characteristics of the Millennials:

The following traits are representative only based from various sources; such as Wikipedia, Deloitte and Pew Research from 2006 to 2014

  • They enjoy to be a part of certain society outside their family “civic minded”
  • They demonstrate strong sense of community both globally and locally, however relatively unattached with organized politics or religion
  • They have a sense of entitlement and narcissism, also demonstrate collaborative and innovative thinking
  • Their behaviors were mostly influenced by technological trends, gadgets, economic implications and the internet-at-large
  • Their motivation in pursuing career opportunities become frequent as they don’t see long term dedication to a particular employer
  • They demonstrate optimism about their country compared to their older generations, but has the highest level of student-loan debts
  • Their generation has the highest level of unemployment
  • They love conveniences that sustain their active lifestyles (source: Forbes.com)

Who are Millennials? According to Authors William Strauss and Neil Howe, these are the people who were born between 1982 and 2004; source: Wikipedia

Millennials have the abilities to navigate ‘hard-to-answer’ questions by effectively searching digital interfaces and networks. These types of techniques produce positive results. Pew Research provided informative insights that relate to certain behaviors of Millennials.

Millennials Three Considerations when maximizing potentials professionally and personally abroad:

1. Millennials must acquire adequate cross-cultural competency in order to be successful abroad.

2. Organizations that wanted to be strategically prepared and be successful in working with Millennials; responsible employees must acquire strategic competency in managing multicultural millennial.

3. Inexperienced individuals who will work with Millennials can hire a Coach, who will provide guidance and briefings on many areas that will make you become effective. At ReloNavigator, we provide coaching and guidance to both individuals and corporate clients.
